In the 16th century Wittenberg attained great importance as one of the most influential German centres of political, cultural and artistic endeavours. First mentioned in records in 1183, Wittenberg was the seat of the House of Ascania and later the Wettin dynasty. Even today visitors can still enjoy the ambience of the Reformation and the Renaissance. The Castle Church with its world-famous "Theses door", the graves of Luther and Melanchthon, the Cranach courtyards and the Town Church are all found within moments of each other in the old quarter with its myriad of stone monuments.
Ferropolis is a museum and events venue located on a peninsula in the lake formed by the disused Golpa-Nord open-cast mine near the town of Gräfenhainichen, east of Dessau. This unique monument chronicles 150 years of lignite mining in eastern Germany. Five enormous excavators are gathered together on a peninsula in the middle of Lake Gremmin. As well as being technical monuments, these five giant industrial behemoths form an interactive, walk-through industrial museum. Ferropolis is also a venue for cultural events with capacity for up to 25,000 spectators.
Welcome to the land of the kings and kaisers, a veritable treasure trove for sightseers. Along the 1,000-kilometres of the Romanesque Route, you can still find preserved buildings dating back to the Middle Ages, ranging from stone churches and tranquil abbeys to towering cathedrals and mighty castles. The route between Arendsee and Zeitz takes in 60 towns and villages and 72 Romanesque buildings. With its Romanesque attractions this route in the treasure house of Saxony-Anhalt is a "must" for culture vultures and history lovers.
