Wörlitz Park enthralled none other than Goethe himself. Nature and art can sometimes make strange bedfellows, but here they enjoy a romantic love affair. The park is the highlight of the 25-kilometre-long Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz that runs beside the Middle Elbe River, and which has been declared a site of world cultural heritage by UNESCO. Amid this elegantly designed scenery, you'll find something new round every corner, whether youre taking a trip on one of the canals or strolling along a winding footpath. There are also countless spectacular spots for budding photographers to practise their talents.
The Elbe, Germany's last free-flowing watercourse, is a wild, defiant and beautiful river. In the Elbe biosphere reserve, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site, you can capture the magic of this spectacular river and its fascinating unspoilt landscapes. Covering an area of 43,000 hectares the reserve is the largest conservation area in the region. An area of river meadows, it is also has the largest contiguous riverside forest in eastern Germany. The wide variety of flora and fauna lend this beautiful natural scenery an unmistakable appearance.
Covering an area of around 1,000km², this densely wooded nature reserve with its heathland scenery and gentle rolling hills, boasts a rich array of flora and fauna, some of which are unique to the region. Featuring natural trails, walking routes and cycle paths, this is a destination that nature lovers will to want to visit time and time again. Examples of its rich wildlife include Roe deer, red deer, wild boar and hares, while the beaver, the animal that features on the region's coat of arms, is also a common sight.
