In 1823, Prussia's first public museum, now called Old Museum, marked the beginning of a unique historical architectural ensemble for art and culture on the Berlin Museum Island. Together with the (today: Old) National Gallery (built 1866-1876) in the south and Bode Museum (formerly Emperor Frederick Museum, built 1897 - 1904) on the northern point of the river Spree, it forms the magnificent nucleus of Berlin's great variety of museums. The Pergamon Altar is undisputedly one of the hightlights of the exhibits, on show at the latest
UNESCO World Heritage museum which carries its name.
