Martin Luther referred to Eisenach as "my dear town." He attended St. George's school here, a hardworking, talented and modest boy, popular with both teachers and students. It was here, at one of Germany's most revered castles, the Wartburg, that he translated the New Testament into German. Luther also preached at St George's Church here in 1521.
The Luther memorials have been lovingly preserved: Luther's house, one of the oldest half-timbered houses in Eisenach, hides a modern exhibition behind its venerable walls where you can learn about his life. Nestled in the idyllic countryside, Eisenach is home to a beautiful medieval town center.
