Marie Antoinette - a dramatic new musical

Marie Antoinette Copyright: Ingo Wagner
The eventful life of Marie Antoinette provides a wealth of material for a fascinating, emotionally gripping musical that has audiences spellbound. After a successful opening in Asia, Bremen Musical Theatre is the setting for the European premiere of a lavish new production of Marie Antoinette.

The new musical tells the moving story of its eponymous heroine and takes us back to the turbulent times of the French revolution. Fascinating details from the life of Marie Antoinette with all its ups and downs bring the plot to life. The daughter of Maria Theresia, the powerful Empress of Austria, she is married off to the French King Louis XVI at the tender age of 15 for political reasons. But life at the opulent French court is very lonely, and with her extravagance and her continuous breaches of court etiquette she becomes the hate figure of the French revolution. The dramatic climax of the story is Marie Antoinette's death sentence. After being imprisoned for years she is finally executed in 1793 as the last queen of France.

Glittering balls, famous historical events and revolution in the air provide the background for the story and give the stirring, emotional music plenty to work with. It was written by Sylvester Levay, who together with Michael Kunze created such hit musicals as Elisabeth, Mozart! and Rebecca.
