Renaissance art

Knight, Death, Devil by Albrecht Dürer; Germanic National Museum Nuremberg
The Renaissance was a cultural movement based on a reawakening of the classical period. Beginning in Italy, scholars became increasingly interested in literature and philosophy from ancient Greece and Rome. Universities offered studies of the classical languages for which a high demand could be oberved. It was a general thought that students should have a good command of Latin and Greek. Humanists such as Erasmus of Rotterdam focused their teachings on people as individuals, while artists such as Titian, da Vinci, Bruegel and Dürer drew inspiration from antiquity, depicting man and his surroundings as realistically as possible.
