Politics
European countries differed greatly in their political makeup during the Renaissance. England, France and Spain, for example, were nation states with powerful and independent monarchies. Germany, on the other hand, was a disparate patchwork of states led by kings, princes and counts. Despite being under the authority of the Holy Roman Empire, they ruled over their lands in a largely autonomous manner and sought to strengthen their position against the Emperor.
