Art & culture

Würzburg Kulturspeicher Museum, copyright Andreas Bestle
The town's art and cultural scene is defined by its rich heritage. The Cathedral Museum juxtaposes traditional and modern works of art. The Kulturspeicher Museum houses the Ruppert Collection of post-1945 concrete art and also the Municipal Collection of works by regional artists.

Cathedral Museum
The diocese of Würzburg exhibits modern and contemporary works of art and also art from the 11th to the 18th century in this four-storey museum. Works by Joseph Beuys, Otto Dix, Ben Willikens and Käthe Kollwitz form the nucleus of the permanent exhibition and the Romanesque, Gothic and baroque periods are represented by masterpieces by Johann Zick, Georg Anton Urlaub and Tilman Riemenschneider. The museum is unusual in its concept of creating tension by juxtaposing old masters with modern art.

Kulturspeicher Museum
The museum houses two collections which stand in stark contrast to each other. The Peter C. Ruppert collection showcases the 20th century concrete art movement showing works from 22 European countries. The Municipal Collection comprises figurative works with a more local outlook from the 19th century to the present day.
