There are a number of castles and palaces along the stretch of the river between the old Roman town of Koblenz and the legendary Loreley. Marksburg Castle is the only clifftop castle on the Middle Rhine that is still intact, a text-book example. Dating mainly from the 14th century, this impressive fortress consists of a keep, several buildings, outer wards and ramparts sitting on top of a rocky cliff overlooking the small town of Braubach, around 12 kilometres from Koblenz.
