Every year at the end of August or the beginning of September, Gifhorn goes wild. Thousands of people from near and far descend on the town to celebrate with the locals. The festivities take place across numerous stages, on various squares and courtyards, as well as inside and outside pubs and cafés across the town even nearby car parks are taken over! In short, the entire town centre is transformed into a non-stop extravaganza of music, attractions and activities, promising fun and entertainment for all ages. The event has grown to become one of the region's largest street festivals.
The Schützenfest, Gifhorn's oldest public festival, is held every year in the week in which 18 June falls. The first civil decree pertaining to Gifhorn's shooting competition dates back to 1661, and the top marksmen have been recorded since 1706. The event kicks off on the Thursday with a procession through the town. On the same afternoon, a contest is held to find the Schützenkönig (top marksman). On Sunday, a larger parade, this time featuring the town's clubs and associations, culminates in a popular firework display.
Known as "Fire and Water live", this popular open-air classical music concert takes place every year in mid-July. Against the magnificent backdrop of Gifhorn Castle with its picturesque park, acclaimed artists and musicians wow the crowds on several stages. Enjoy music, entertainment and fireworks galore in a magical torchlit atmosphere. Exhibitions, activities and tours complete the picture.
