Stralsund Sail, together with the Stralsund Sailing Week, takes place every year in June and is the most important meeting in the West Pomeranian region of the Baltic. Not only do the triangular races on the Strela Sound demand the greatest skill from the sailors, the circuits around Rügen and Hiddensee also put participants to a difficult test. The traditional meeting has turned into a very popular public festival.
Every year in July, for nearly 400 years, the people of Stralsund have held a grand parade to celebrate the expulsion of Wallenstein's troops, who unsuccessfully laid siege to the town in 1648. The historical part of the festival is traditionally held on Alter Markt square. The area is transformed into a market from the period of the Thirty Years' War. Traders, craftsmen and men at arms set the scene. An old-fashioned cattle market takes place in the courtyard of the Church of St. Nicholas and, all along the pedestrian area, traders and craftsmen set up their stalls. Baroque fireworks and the Wallenstein Party round off the historical spectacle.
Every year in October, for the past twelve years, hundreds of cyclists from near and far have been meeting to ride about 50 kilometres along the German Avenues Route from Stralsund to Bergen, either as a club, with friends or the whole family, alongside current and former world champions, Olympic champions, participants in the Friedensfahrt and the Tour de France. Escort vehicles from the police, the German Red Cross and the "Mecklenburger Radtour", with spare wheels, ensure the safety and enjoyment of the participants.
