Nature & greenery

Almost all of the Upper Swabian region was shaped by glaciers during the last ice age. Follow in the footsteps of the peat-cutters through the Wurzacher Ried, one of the foremost high moorland areas in southern Germany, explore the natural stone park near Biberach or follow the St James' Pilgrimage Way through the countryside of Upper Swabia to Santiago de Compostelo for a special experience.

Wurzacher Ried nature conservation area
Set in the hilly moraine landscape of the Alpine foothills, the largely unspoilt moorland scenery of the Wurzacher Ried unfurls to the north of Bad Wurzach. Walking through this region is like taking a journey through natural history. It is home to over 700 plants and more than 1,500 different species of animal. Depending on the time of year, you will see orchids in full bloom, bushes dripping with blueberries at the side of the path or the magnificent colours of the heather, cotton grass and yellow loosestrife with silver-washed fritillaries and Purple Emperors flitting about in between. The 1,812-hectare area was awarded a Category A European Diploma in 1989 and 1994.

Natural Stone Park, Biberach
See a host of heavenly gardening ideas on show at the 10,000m² natural stone park on the site of a disused gravel pit. Set out like a small Federal Garden Show, it showcases the skills of designers and craftsmen working with natural stone and gardens. Each garden is designed around a particular theme with great attention to detail. The ten metre square gardens with their ponds and streams present the interaction between form, water, stone, wood and plants and feature a variety of fountains, glacial boulders, well stones and garden statues.

St James' Pilgrimage Way
For thousands of years, people from all over Europe have travelled along the St James' Pilgrimage Way to the grave of the apostle St. James the Elder in the Spanish town of Santiago de Compostela. The "Camino de Santiago" or St James' Pilgrimage Way runs for 165km along historical paths through Upper Swabia, following the route taken by the medieval pilgrims.
