World heritage

Goethe was not the only person to be captivated by Weimar's charms. Today the town is still brimming with cultural places of interest so it is not surprising that almost the whole town is listed by UNESCO. To be precise, the world heritage sites of "Classical Weimar include parkland as well as buildings and comprise Goethe's house, Schiller's house, sites associated with Herder, Weimar Palace, Wittums Palace, the Duchess Anna Amalia Library, the park on the Ilm, Belvedere Palace park, Ettersburg Palace and Park, Tiefurt Palace and Park as well as the royal crypt each one reason enough for a visit.
According to legend, Wartburg Castle was founded in the year 1067 above the town of Eisenach. Saint Elisabeth lived there, minstrels competed with each other in the 13th century and then there was Martin Luther. Placed under an imperial ban by the Imperial Diet of Worms in 1521, he lived here from 1521 to 1522 under the protection of Elector Friedrich III of Saxony, translating the New Testament into German and throwing his inkpots around.
